Baptism - A Call to Mission & MinistryBaptism is the first Sacrament of initiation followed by Reconciliation, Confirmation and culminating with becoming full members of the church, The Body of Christ: when we receive our First Communion. 1275 Christian initiation is accomplished by three sacraments together: Baptism which is the beginning of new life; Confirmation which is its strengthening; and the Eucharist which nourishes the disciple with Christ's Body and Blood for his transformation in Christ. Baptism call to mission and ministry Ministry is linked to our baptism. Baptism is the foundational sacrament for ministry, and we are all called to accept the right to minister and the duty to contribute to the mission of Jesus in our church and world. Baptism is our vocation to become Priests, Prophets and Kings. We are baptised into the person of Jesus 1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), 4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word."5 1268 The baptised have become "living stones" to be "built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood." 74 By Baptism they share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. They are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, that [they] may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called [them] out of darkness into his marvellous light."75 Baptism gives a share in the common priesthood of all believers. |
Baptising Your ChildPeople who request Baptism for their children are required to attend a one-hour preparation session where the sacrament will be explored in relation to the administration of the Sacrament.
