Catholic Women's League Formation
The Catholic Women's League of Aotearoa New Zealand was founded in 1906 in England by Margaret Fletcher. Her aim was to make Catholic women conscious of the contribution, based on the teaching of the Catholic Church, that they could make to the social, intellectual and spiritual life of the community.
Our Patron Saint is St Margaret Clitherow, also known as "the Pearl of York". Married and a mother of three children Margaret was martyred during the reign of Elizabeth I and was canonised in 1970. Margaret was not raised a Catholic but converted after her marriage. Her husband remained a member of the established church.

CWL was first established in New Zealand in 1931 in Auckland; Wellington began in 1944. Father Herlihy, the first Chaplain, made it clear that League was meant to be an action group working for the welfare and spiritual development of women and to be a Catholic voice in the community.
Members within the Wellington Archdiocese have taken a prominent part in the Archdiocesan affairs and many have also been prominent in their communities.
